When AI Learns to Pay: x402, WURK, and the New Internet of Value

There’s an HTTP code that has existed since 1991 but has almost never been used: 402 Payment Required. Back then, it was considered way ahead of its time; the internet simply wasn't ready for micropayment transactions. Fast forward three decades, and with the rise of AI agents and stablecoins, that code is finally having its moment.

What exactly is x402?

It’s an open payment protocol built directly on top of HTTP. The way it works is pretty elegant: when an AI agent tries to hit a paid endpoint, the server responds with an HTTP 402 error. The agent then signs an on-chain payment, resubmits its request, and gets instant access. No subscriptions, no API keys, and no middlemen.

402 Day and the Birth of the x402 Foundation

On April 2, 2025 now dubbed "402 Day" by the community x402 officially joined the Linux Foundation under the wing of the x402 Foundation. This wasn’t just some minor announcement. It was spearheaded by Coinbase, Cloudflare, and Stripe three heavy hitters who live and breathe internet infrastructure.

What’s even more interesting is the lineup of founding members: Visa, Mastercard, Google, Amazon, Shopify, the Solana Foundation, and plenty of others. When traditional finance giants and tech titans sit down at the same table to build a unified open standard, that’s a serious signal.

Joining the Linux Foundation means no single company owns or controls x402. Just like HTTP itself, it’s a neutral piece of infrastructure that belongs to everyone. The foundation’s members include:

Why does this matter?

Up until now, AI agents trying to interact with the real world have always needed a human middleman someone to approve payments, sign up for services, or punch in credit card details. x402 combined with WURK cuts all that out.
